Methods of Consumption

Inhalation of Cannabis

When people think about cannabis, they think of smoking a joint.

A better option is the vaporize cannabis.  Vaping cannabis has the quickest effect of all routes.  Inhaling gets cannabinoids into the body through the lungs, passing directly into your blood stream.

People feel the effects of the medication within minutes, with peak effects around the hour mark and total duration of effects around two hours.

Oral Intake of Cannabis

Cannabis consumed orally enters the blood stream after being digested in the stomach and absorbed in the intestines.

Oral intake effects are felt in 30 minutes, with peak effects of 1-2 hours.

Duration can last as long as six hours.

Factors such as the amount of food consumed prior to medicating, strength of the product and even a person’s metabolism can all affect the overall experience.

Sublingual / Oral Mucosal

Under the tongue there are a large number of blood vessels which can absorb cannabinoids.

Before you swallow, cannabis enters the blood stream. Common examples of these type of medications include dissolvable strips, sublingual sprays, lozenges & tinctures.

The time of onset for this method of consumption is similar to those seen in general oral consumption, however, some people feel effects sooner.

Cannabis Topicals

The skin has a complex absorption process that allows cannabinoids to be absorbed through the skin.

Examples of topical products include creams, balms and transdermal patches like the ones used to quit smoking.

Topical cannabinoids have an onset of action within minutes locally (i.e. creams and balms applied to a joint), with duration lasting one to two hours. Individuals who use patches notice onset of action within an hour, lasting up to 48 hours.
